Strength and Development Programs

The goal of the strength and development programs is to develop a bigger, stronger, faster, quicker and more explosive, mobile, agile and efficient hockey player. These programs are comprehensive and designed to address every area. Weight training is used to improve overall strength and increase muscle mass to help prevent injury, while establishing a foundation where more advanced performance and hockey specific training can be built upon. Pioneering and unique techniques fuel the exercises that will enable the player to transfer the progress made in the gym to their game on the ice. Dynamic and explosive power training incorporates progressively increased weight and resistance being applied to exercises that reflect virtually all the movement patterns, positions and situations a player is exposed to on the ice. Mobility and agility training is performed within skating planes and stride pathways that mirror the biomechanics of skating. Speed endurance and efficiency training is accomplished by having players work at high lactate (lactic acid) levels in the posture of skating within specified time increments and varied intensity levels.

Additional Benefits:
  • Increase in lean muscle mass
  • Increased joint stability
  • Increased functional flexibility
  • Optimized strength to body mass ratio increasing on ice acceleration
  • Increased skating stride force production capability
  • Increased skating stride plane mobility
  • Increased muscle buffering capacity (lactic acid toleration)
  • Increased core strength and rotational power
  • Improved balance
  • Self Confidence

Shooting Programs

A new synthetic ice surface has been installed.
Players will now be wearing their skates.
The program teaches players to shoot with proper technique in order to harmonize their stick and their body to better the accuracy, velocity and release of their shot. Some of the physical technical components to be addressed are weight distribution, posture, hand positioning, blade angling, release points, blade pressure, and top and bottom hand functioning. The program also teaches concepts of situational shooting and goal scoring and is highlighted by determining shot selection, the utilization of screens, the lateral push and pull of the puck to create goalie movement and drifting to timely open areas of net. Lastly, the cerebral component is tackled by teaching the player the goalies perspective, giving the offensive player the knowledge to deceive and manipulate the goaltender. There will also be video analysis of shooting technique.
